Edelweiss and Marvelous have announced Sakuna Chronicles: Kokorowa and the Gears of Creation, a spin-off of the hit action and farm simulation game, Sakuna: Of Rice and Ruin. The spin-off follows Kokorowa after she meets a peculiar automaton named Takebina. Meet new gods and tackle this new adventure as Sakuna’s friend, Princess Kokorowa!

Denneko Yuugi, the developer behind the Machina of the Planet Tree games, have announced that their upcoming 3D action roguelite, Eternal Palace Sakura, will be heading to Steam in the latter half of 2025. It is part of the Machina of the Planet Tree series. The player controls Retla, a brown-skinned, cat-eared girl wielding dual blades, as she battles her way through dungeons, getting stronger along the way.

Eternal Palace Sakura will release with support for multiple languages including Japanese, English, Simplified Chinese, and Traditional Chinese. Kotobukiya has produced many Trails series figures as of late, including for characters such as Estelle Bright, Rean Schwarzer, Tio Plato, and more. In addition to these already released characters, they are also currently working on figures for Joshua Bright and Elaine Auclair. Now, a new character from the Calvard arc will be joining the figure lineup. Shizuna Rem Misurugi, known as the Divine Blade of Silver, will be receiving her own figure. While not much has been shown of her figure, Kotobukiya has shared sneak peeks of the prototype. You can check those out below.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails through Daybreak was published by NIS America in the west and launched on July 5th, 2024. Its sequel, Trails through Daybreak II, is currently scheduled to launch in the west on February 14, 2024. The latest game in the series, The Legend of Heroes: Kai no Kiseki -Farewell, O Zemuria-, launched in Japan on September 26th, 2024.

During the STEINS;GATE 15th Live -One World-, an event celebrating the 15th anniversary of the visual novel, a new title was announced. STEINS;GATE RE:BOOT, a remake of the original visual novel, is scheduled to release in 2025. It will be based off the original visual novel, not the more recent Elite release, and will feature new graphics and additional story. The visual novel’s original character designer, huke, returns to work on RE:BOOT.

Ys X: Nordics, the latest entry chronicling the adventures of Adol Christin, is now available in North America and Europe on Nintendo Switch, PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, and PC (Steam, Epic Games Store, GOG).

Adventures are wonderful experiences. They allow one to explore unknown regions and experience unfamiliar cultures, and the Ys series truly embodies the adventurer’s spirit. Each entry in this series has you explore brand new regions and meet new people, all while saving the day and helping those around you. And while there is a chronological order to these games, most entries can be enjoyed standalone without having played any past game in the series, making it easily accessible to newcomers. Couple this with a well-designed action battle system and a soundtrack that really gets your blood pumping, and the Ys series has really made a place in my heart as one of my most beloved video game franchises. Ys X: Nordics is the latest adventure following the red-haired swordsman, Adol Christin. Ys X is a fresh start as it does away with the party battle system seen in recent games like Ys VIII and opts for one focusing on two playable characters. And in a move I did not expect, X introduces naval exploration and combat. Knowing Adol’s rotten luck with ships, I never thought Falcom would implement something like this, but here we are. I was very much looking forward to playing this newest adventure after it was first announced. Was Ys X another memorable adventure in the story of Adol Christin, or was this one journal that was better off being undiscovered?

Ys X: Nordics takes place shortly after Ys II and before the events of Ys: Memories of Celceta. Adol Christin, along with his companions Dogi and Dr. Flair, travel to Celceta in search of their next adventure. Unfortunately, their trip takes an unexpected detour when their ship is boarded by the Balta Seaforce, a group of Normans that safeguard the Obelia Gulf region. Adol and crew end up having to wait at the port town of Carnac for the next passenger ship. Here, Adol receives the mysterious power of Mana from a voice calling themselves Lila. Oh, and he also ends up getting cuffed via Mana to a Norman girl, Karja. As the two try to figure out what’s going on, tragedy strikes the town of Carnac, and the pair find themselves at odds with an undead enemy known as the Griegr. What is the true nature of the Griegrs and what is their goal? Who is this Lila that granted Adol the power of Mana? What caused these Mana Cuffs to appear and bind Adol and Karja together? Adol and Karja set sail on the Sandras to not only quell the Griegr threat and save Obelia Gulf, but solve these mysteries popping up around them.

I found the main story to be decent, it isn’t the strongest in the series, but I did enjoy playing through it. It started off strong, but it definitely floundered midway through. But after the midpoint, the story picks up again and leads to a satisfying end. The revelations on the true nature of the Griegr and how they came to be were pretty interesting, and I liked how past events, told through Runestones, connected to current events. However, one of the things I found Ys X handled really well was the development of the main characters and other Sandras crew members. Much of the main cast is in their teens, and they’ve been thrust into an unprecedented situation due to the Griegr threat. Watching them gather the resolve needed to tackle this threat was inspiring, but that’s not all. Not only did the characters achieve the resolve to tackle an unkillable enemy, they also found the courage to chase their dreams and work to better themselves. This can be seen with the members of the Youth Brigade (Grenn, Rosa, Cruz, Rafe, Mira) and others such as Ashley and Ezer. Much of the Sandras crew’s development is optional, but I highly recommend doing their sidequests and watching their bond events. It really adds that much more to the story and how you feel about the characters. As the story progresses, you can also see the characters overcome their preconceived prejudices against others. For Karja this would be her views of non-Normans, for the rest of the crew it would be how they see Normans. Seeing them bond through the course of this journey thanks to this common enemy and extraordinary circumstances was really something. I also thoroughly enjoyed the chemistry between Adol and Karja. Adol is always ready for his next adventure and Karja makes sure to watch his back and make sure he doesn’t go too off the rails. It was enjoyable watching their bond grow throughout the story and seeing Karja grow to trust Adol more and soften her tone toward him. And of course, I mentioned earlier that most of the Ys series is accessible to newcomers, and X is no exception. Newcomers can start with this entry and not feel lost at all. While the story itself had its high and low points, the characters were a very bright spot in this adventure and carried things through.

Ys X: Nordics, like its predecessors, boasts an action battle system. However,  Falcom has done away with the system that has been a staple since Ys Seven. No longer is Adol traveling around fields with large groups of companions with different attack types. This time around, the amount of playable characters has been limited to just two: Adol and Karja. It is known as the Cross Action System, and it allows for players to switch between Adol and Karja and control them independently, but it also allows for controlling both characters at once. When controlling the characters independently, you can perform normal attacks, skills by holding the R1 button and pressing one of the face buttons, jump, dodge, and guard. Skills are powerful attacks that deplete Skill Points (SP) with each use. Dodging allows you to move swiftly out of attacks but also counter Speed Attacks (blue aura attacks). This is important as you can’t guard Speed Attacks. When both Adol and Karja are present (which is most of the game), regular guards turn into a Duo Guard, allowing you to block most attacks without taking any damage. Duo Guards also allow you to protect against Power Attacks (red aura attacks). Power Attacks can’t be guarded when solo, and dodging is ineffective against these attacks. Holding down the R2 button switches control into Duo Mode. In this mode, you can control Adol and Karja at the same time. Here, you can perform Duo Attacks on foes which involve striking the enemy at the same time and Duo Skills. Duo Skills are extremely powerful moves that Adol and Karja perform in tandem, allowing you to quickly take down the enemy’s Durability Gauge and their HP Gauge. These skills can be made even more deadly in combat thanks to the Revenge Gauge mechanic. As you Duo Guard enemy attacks, the Revenge Gauge slowly fills up. The rate at which the gauge fills up can quicken if you guard attacks at the right time. The gauge can reach a maximum of x5.0, and the higher the number, the stronger the Duo Skill becomes. The Revenge Gauge mechanic definitely comes in handy when facing stronger normal enemies and bosses. It may sound overwhelming, but once you get used to these mechanics, it makes for a very cohesive battle system.,

Adol and Karja can be strengthened via leveling up, getting new equipment, and via the Release Line Depth system. The first two are pretty straightforward, but the Release Line Depth is new to the series. In this system, there are a series of nodes where you insert items known as Mana Seeds. Mana Seeds are separated into multiple different categories: Valor, Mettle, Optimism, and Darkness. Valor increases your Strength and ability to whittle down HP; Mettle affects a character’s Defense, Vitality, and ability to deplete Durability; Optimism increases multiple stats including Luck; Darkness can exponentially increase your stats at the cost of decreasing another stat. Depending on how many of a certain Mana Seed type are in a specific Release Line Depth, you can unlock Mana Abilities for Adol and Karja. For example, you can unlock abilities that decrease damage, decrease the amount of SP used, increase damage done, etc. As you reach certain levels, more depths are unlocked, allowing you to insert more Mana Seeds and use seeds of a higher quality. Using this system, you can really have Adol and Karja specialize in whatever suits your needs. In my case, I built Adol like a glass cannon with high Strength, but lower Defense and Vitality. Karja on the other hand had overwhelming Defense and Vitality with a high Break stat. So I would use Karja to destroy an enemy’s Durability Gauge and then switch to Adol to really bring the hurt. Honestly, I really only paid attention to the stat boosts and tended to ignore whatever Mana Abilities were unlocked, but this system was very beneficial overall.

The manga is licensed by Viz Media for release in North America. The anime’s first season was produced by MADHOUSE and ran for 28 episodes. It aired from September 2023 to March 2024 and Crunchyroll streamed the series in North America.

A brand new trailer has been released for the Netflix animated adaptation of Devil May Cry. The series comes from the mind of Adi Shankar, known for his work on the Netflix Castlevania animated series, and Studio Mir animates the project.

Johnny Yong Bosch, the voice actor behind Nero in the Devil May Cry video games, voices Dante in the animated series. Reuben Langdon, Dante’s voice actor in most of the video games, was quick to congratulate Johnny and mentioned Johnny was already part of the DMC family.

Devil May Cry is set to premiere on Netflix in April 2025. It is an adaptation of the popular series of hack-and-slash video games of the same name by Capcom.

Nintendo has announced that they and The Pokémon Company have filed a lawsuit against Pocketpair, the developer behind Palworld. It alleges that Palworld infringed on multiple patent rights, and Nintendo says it will continue to protect its intellectual properties.

The full news release is as follows:

Nintendo Co., Ltd. (HQ: Kyoto, Minami-ku, Japan; Representative Director and President: Shuntaro Furukawa, “Nintendo” hereafter), together with The Pokémon Company, filed a patent infringement lawsuit in the Tokyo District Court against Pocketpair, Inc. (HQ: 2-10-2 Higashigotanda, Shinagawa-ku, Tokyo, “Defendant” hereafter) on September 18, 2024.

This lawsuit seeks an injunction against infringement and compensation for damages on the grounds that Palworld, a game developed and released by the Defendant, infringes multiple patent rights.

Nintendo will continue to take necessary actions against any infringement of its intellectual property rights including the Nintendo brand itself, to protect the intellectual properties it has worked hard to establish over the years.

Seven Seas Entertainment have licensed Fate/kaleid liner Prisma Illya for release in English. The manga is written by Hiroshi Hiroyama and is a spin-off of TYPE-MOON’s Fate/stay night visual novel. Prisma Illya has two sequel series: 2wei! and 3rei!! As of today, 3rei!! is still ongoing.

Seven Seas Entertainment provides a synopsis for the manga and is as follows:

Illya might be rich, but she’s just like any other elementary school girl—she has a secret crush and loves magical girl anime. But when a magical “Kaleidostick” wand named Ruby tricks her into signing a contract, Illya becomes a magical girl herself! To celebrate the 10 year anniversary of Freedom Wars, Bandai Namco Entertainment has announced a remaster titled FREEDOM WARS REMASTERED. It will launch for PlayStation 4, PlayStation 5, Nintendo Switch, and PC via Steam on January 10th, 2025. The original game was developed by Sony Computer Entertainment’s Japan Studio alongside Shift and Dimps for PlayStation Vita and launched in 2014.

At Aniplex Online Fest 2024, a TV anime adaptation for The Fragrant Flower Blooms With Dignity (Kaoru Hana wa Rin to Saku) was announced. The anime is an adaptation of Saka Mikami’s romance manga of the same name which is published in Kodansha’s Magazine Pocket. CloverWorks will produce the anime and it is scheduled to premiere in 2025.

Dragami Games has announced that LOLLIPOP CHAINSAW RePOP is now available digitally for players in North America, Central and South America, and Europe on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. The game is available worldwide on PC via Steam. It is scheduled to launch for consoles in Asia on September 26, 2024. The game retails for $44.99.

LOLLIPOP CHAINSAW RePOP is a remaster of LOLLIPOP CHAINSAW which originally launched for PlayStation 3 and Xbox 360. It was developed by Grasshopper Manufacture and was a collaborative effort between Suda51 and James Gunn.

The remaster is developed by Dragami Games and produced by Yoshimi Yasuda. Its features are described as follows:

• Quality of Life Improvements
• The resolution of the game has been increased to full HD, and load times have been greatly
  shortened.
• The chainsaw action has been sped up with the introduction of the Chained Hits Hunting system, in
  which chaining multiple hits in succession increases the player’s attack speed.
• The input timings for Combo Actions have been adjusted, to better fit players’ expectations.
• Chainsaw Blaster action has been improved with the addition of auto-lock and auto-fire modes
  that can be toggled, and an increased maximum ammo count of 99.
• The player can now immediately use Combo Actions at the start of the game

• Additional Gameplay Content
• Separate from Original Mode, RePOP adds “RePOP mode”, which uses a unique and colorful pop art-inspired art style for damage effects.
• Unique new chainsaws with distinctly different features have been added.
• There are 30 costumes, more than the original game’s costume count. Combined with the addition
  of 4 new hair colors and 4 new chainsaws, this adds up to 750 different possible combinations.
• JULIET’S ROOM has been expanded with more features.
• A Time Attack mode with ranking feature has been added.

LOLLIPOP CHAINSAW RePOP is out now digitally in the Americas and Europe for PS5, Xbox Series X|S, and Nintendo Switch. It is out worldwide for PC via Steam. It will launch for consoles in Asia on September 26, 2024. RePOP will also launch worldwide for PlayStation 4 and Xbox One in November 2024. Dynamis One has decided to cancel their upcoming title, Project KV, shortly after releasing their promotional video (PV) for it. The company cited their inexperience among other things for the project’s cancelation. The project was helmed by staff who previously worked on Blue Archive such as former scenario director, isakusan. You can check out the announcement in Japanese and Korean below.

Project KV was shrouded in controversy following its announcement due to its development timeline and the people involved. X user Stella created a document to try and help shed light on the controversies surrounding Dynamis One and Project KV‘s development. You can reach said document HERE. I cannot state with certainty whether or not the information in the document is truthful or accurate. Studio Alaya and Dynamis One have released the newest PV and key visual for their upcoming project, Project KV. It is described as a nostalgic school action drama about girls with swords that takes place in Kapila, the Dormitory City. Its production is lead by members who previously worked on popular mobile game, Blue Archive. The scenario is written by isakusan, the former scenario director of Blue Archive. The art director is DoReMi, and they have previously designed and illustrated multiple characters for Blue Archive such as Hina, Arisu, Aru, Kayoko, and Iroha. Mitsukiyo is in charge of the project’s music, and they are also Blue Archive‘s music director.

Of the four characters previewed, the official website was updated to give some details on Ohitome Kohane, the first character introduced. Kohane ran away from home due to her grandmother’s nagging. She found herself in Kapila and ended up joining Yunooka Dormitory. Now, she has no intention of going home, and she thinks hot springs are the best.

In addition to this, key members of the staff (isakusan, DoReMi, Mitsukiyo) will be participating at Winter Comiket (C105) alongside Mx2J. Mx2J also worked on Blue Archive as an illustrator and character designer.

Project KV is planned to start in 2024. It is not clear what form of media the project will be as this has not been officially announced. However, isakusan did quote repost the Comiket participation post mentioning how excited they are to work on a visual novel again, so it’s possible Project KV will be a visual novel. Jae (Fkkcloud), the director at indie developer Studio Sai, has announced that their debut indie title, Eternights, has sold 200,000 units. In celebration of this huge milestone, a Nintendo Switch version has been announced. It is scheduled to launch on October 17, 2024, and pre-orders are open now.

Eternights is an indie title that blends dating simulation elements with hack ‘n’ slash gameplay. The game is described by the developer as follows:

Kotobukiya has unveiled the decoration master (decomas) for their upcoming scale figure of Joshua Bright from The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky SC. The figure is 1/8 scale and utilizes Joshua’s outfit from the second game in the Liberl trilogy. It is scheduled to release in May 2025. You can check out pictures of the figure below.

Those who order the first production run of the figure will receive a bonus smiling face part for Joshua. This part will not be exclusive to the Kotobukiya Online Store and will be offered by all distributors in the first production run. During the August 27, 2024 Nintendo Direct: Partner Showcase, some exciting news was revealed for fans of Nihon Falcom’s Trails series. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 1st, a full 3D remake of the first game in the long-running Trails series, has been announced. The game is currently confirmed for Nintendo Switch. 

While the remake only received a couple seconds of screen time in the Nintendo of America Direct, the Japanese Nintendo Direct showcased an almost minute long trailer for the game. You can check out that trailer below. Based on the trailer, it appears the remake will utilize a battle system similar to the one used in Trails through Daybreak.

In addition to the trailer, Nintendo released English screenshots for the highly anticipated remake. You can check those out below.

As pointed out by James Galizio of RPG Site, Trails in the Sky the 1st appears to be using XSEED’s translation of the original as a foundation for the remake. It should be noted that this does not confirm whether or not a specific publisher is working on the game. As of this moment, no publisher has announced they are working on the game.

The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky the 1st is scheduled to launch in 2025 for Nintendo Switch. More information on the game, such as additional platforms and the publisher, will be announced at a later time.
