One not so secret about myself is that I love card games. Don’t get me wrong, videogames come first, but I find the occasional card game a great mental exercise. They can be diverting and many have great fanbases. And sure, some CCGs are more popular than others. One pretty much everybody knows is Magic the Gathering. I grew up with that particular game, though recently I’ve become much more of a fan of Yu-Gi-Oh! The reason I mention popular card games is I feel ManaRocks takes many, many cues from the well known ones, notably Magic.

ManaRocks is developed by Brazilian team Rockgames, and it’s very clear to me they’re familiar with Magic. Though ManaRocks isn’t a complete clone, it shares many similarities. Fantastical creatures, mana costs for playing cards, monsters not being able to attack and then defend, the list goes on. And while I do feel this game does a few things all its own, part of me feels it doesn’t do enough.

ManaRocks starts with a quick tutorial showing you the basics. Unlike Magic, you accumulate more mana every turn without having to play it from your deck. Cards you activate give you more mana, and by playing enough cards of your element, you’ll power up your hero’s special abilities. In the tutorial, I was a green elf maiden, so I could summon tokens with my ability. The abilities also power up over time, but I never had a match last long enough to see how that worked. There are other elemental focuses, such as dark necromancers and wily blue sorcerers.

While I appreciate the tutorial and Story Mode in ManaRocks, which lets you fight set battles to unlock cards and additional decks, the real focus is Ranked play. This is the only mode that lets you accumulate experience, for one. What’s interesting about this mode is that it isn’t 1 v 1 battles. It forces you to play with a partner against another duo, either a real person or CPU. Funny enough, Yu-Gi-Oh! fans have been craving actual tag team duels forever, so it’s cool to see that here. Unfortunately, in effect it’s not that interesting. You can’t really communicate with your partner, other than with preset emojis. And though you can use cards your partner has activated, I was always hesitant to do so. Play any card game in real life long enough, and you’ll learn about card etiquette. Touching someone else’s cards without permission is a no no for me, even online.

I do appreciate the variety of cards in ManaRocks, as well as the artwork. This is an attractive game, and it’s nice that it’s free. What frustrated me is that I got a couple press codes to unlock more goodies in my time with the game, and neither worked. Also, when you start ManaRocks, you have to provide an email. After I did so, I never got any confirmation email about starting the game. So it’s clear Rockgames still has a few bugs to iron out. Perhaps most egregious was when I played a Ranked battle and lost for an unknown reason. My opponent hadn’t played any cards to deal damage to my character, yet suddenly I took massive direct damage and lost in the course of two turns. That after being in the lead for most of the game. I checked, and my opponent didn’t seem to have any ability that corresponded to that loss either.

ManaRocks | Problems

If you’re eager for a free to play digital card game, ManaRocks can definitely satisfy that itch. Just don’t expect anything genre defining. ManaRocks definitely plays it safe, but some players might prefer that. If that’s you, feel free to check the game out on Steam. Here’s hoping the game continues to evolve and grow better over time.

Sword Art Online | Movie Banner

Aniplex of America Inc. has announced a digital release of Sword Art Online The Movie -Ordinal Scale-, a film that has hit theaters last year. It is available on iTunes, Vudu, and the Microsoft Store.  This same version is planned to hit Amazon Video and Playstation Video as well. The main reason for the release was to give fans a more accessible option compared to the physical package. However, there is one drawback, in that the digital release is censored, while the film is uncensored on Blu-ray and DVD.

The film itself stars the original voice cast for the anime, where it also features an English Dub with voices such as Bryce Papenbrook. Studio A-1 Pictures animated the movie alongside director Tomohiko Ito, character designer Shingo Adachi, and composer Yuki Kajiura.

PRESS RELEASE

Aniplex of America Announces

Sword Art Online The Movie –Ordinal Scale-

Now Available for Digital Release

The movie that brought Sword Art Online fans together worldwide now available for digital download!

SANTA MONICA, CA (February 1, 2018) – Aniplex of America Inc. announced that the fan-favorite anime blockbuster Sword Art Online The Movie -Ordinal Scale– is now available for digital release, launching on iTunes, Vudu, and the Microsoft Store. The film, which takes place after the high-stakes events of Sword Art Online, will also be available on Amazon Video and Playstation Video at a later date. Now fans unable to purchase the package release can experience the action, giving a budget-friendly, censored option just in time for the next season of Sword Art Online. Links to download the film can be found at: http://sao-movie.net/us/blu_ray_dvd/#digital_hd

Based on the franchise of best-selling light novels that inspired the TV anime, Sword Art Online The Movie -Ordinal Scale– captured anime fans across North America, with its nationwide theatrical release grossing over $1.35 million on opening weekend. Fans lined up at sold-out theaters as Kirito and Asuna came to life in this new story by original author Reki Kawahara. Sword Art Online The Movie -Ordinal Scale– hit the silver screen in February of 2017, debuting at #1 in Japan and grossing more than ¥425 million. Now, almost one year later, fans can own the digital version of the film that IGN’s Alex Osborn calls “a gift for longtime fans.”

Further catering to longtime fans, Sword Art Online The Movie -Ordinal Scale– features the original voice cast from the TV series, with Yoshitsugu Matsuoka (Sword Art Online, Eromanga Sensei) as Kirito, Haruka Tomatsu (PERSONA 5, Darling in the Franxx) as Asuna, and Ayana Taketatsu (Sword Art Online, The Asterisk War) as Leafa, and introducing Sayaka Kanda as a new character Yuna. The movie also stars an English dub cast of heavy hitters, including Bryce Papenbrook (Blue Exorcist, Sword Art Online) as Kirito, Cherami Leigh (Sword Art Online, ERASED) as Asuna, and more. Famed studio A-1 Pictures (Blue Exorcist, Sword Art Online, ERASED) beautifully animated Reki Kawahara’s vision to life with director Tomohiko Ito (Sword Art Online, ERASED), character designer Shingo Adachi (Sword Art Online), and composer Yuki Kajiura (Fate/stay night [Heaven’s Feel] THE MOVIE 1. Presage flower).

Battle Garegga | Featured

Battle Garegga is a name many fans of old school 2D shooters will recognize. Originally released in 1996 and developed by Raizing, Battle Garegga was an incredibly popular arcade game often cited as one of the best of its kind. It was only ever ported to the Sega Saturn and sadly that version did not make it outside of Japan. As a result, this release has become quite popular among importers and collectors. Copies can typically sell for about $200 or sometimes, even more! Over 20 years later and we not only have an accessible re-release of the game, but a localized one that we can play today! One of the things Battle Garegga was notable for was its use of the “rank” system. Basically, the game’s difficulty would change based on how you play it. For example, collecting too many lives and powerups will make enemies far more aggressive while, losing a life will make the game slightly easier. Managing the rank and figuring out how to manipulate it in your favor will prove to be beneficial in getting through the game especially during some of the later levels. This clever little mechanic gave the game a lot of depth and replay value as players try to master it to be able to complete the game on one credit.

This new release dubbed Battle Garegga Rev. 2016, is packed with features and ways for you to customize your experience. For starters, there are three main game modes: Arcade, Premium and Super Easy. Arcade mode is close to how the game played in 1996, while Premium mode is a new arranged mode. Super Easy as the name will imply, is another new mode designed for newcomers and they won’t have to necessarily worry about the rank system while playing in this mode. You will also have be able to select from 4 different soundtracks and enable new “gadgets” that can display information on screen such as controls, powerups, boss health, ranking graphs, lives and much more. Of course, Battle Garegga Rev. 2016 features online leaderboards and the option to reorient your screen and play in “Vertical Mode”. All in all, it seems M2 has done a great job remastering this classic game and it’s incredible to think that after all these years the game has finally received a console port outside of Japan.

Currently, Battle Garegga Rev. 2016 is a digital-only release and costs $34.99. That might seem like a steep price for a digital download but is nothing compared to how much physical copies currently sell for. Perhaps if the fans make enough noise, M2 can consider doing a physical run. For now however, we can enjoy the game on both the PlayStation 4 and Xbox One.

Good news today for fans of Nicalis and retro gaming! Cave Story+, the latest version of the classic Cave Story experience, is out digitally and physically today. I would highly recommend you pick up the physical version though, since there are two versions apparently, one packed with an instruction booklet and CD and the other with a nifty keychain selection. Either version costs the same, a low $29.99, which is a very nice price point for any physical game these days. But if you prefer digital, you can always open up your Switch and download it right now. To see more details about Cave Story+, read the full press release below!

Cave Story+ | Physical swag
Ooo, gotta get me that sweet swag

Your New Favorite Game, Cave Story+, In Stores Today
Nicalis Releases Charming and Challenging Indie Epic for Nintendo Switch™

SANTA ANA, Calif., June 20, 2017—Nicalis Inc. has officially released the blockbuster Cave Story+ video game for Nintendo Switch in North America. With an MSRP of $29.99 ($39.99 in Canada), players can download a digital copy from the Nintendo eShop or acquire a physical Game Card from their favorite retail outlet.

An unforgettable, life-changing adventure, Cave Story+ puts the player in the shoes of a young hero who wakes up in a hidden wonderland of terrible danger and glorious reward. Unaware of his origin, his purpose or even his own name, the traveler soon encounters a race of rabbit-like creatures called Mimiga on the brink of extinction. Nearly every character he meets gives him another clue to piece together the story of the Mimiga’s oppression and the mystery of his own past.

A highly polished, finely tuned platform/shooting/exploration game, Cave Story+ uses the appealing visual aesthetic of classic 16-bit video games to draw players into a world deep with emotional storytelling. “It’s a big thrill to have Cave Story+ available on Nintendo’s newest game console,” said the game’s creator, Daisuke “Pixel” Amaya. “I hope everyone enjoys playing the Nintendo Switch version on the big screen and also on the go.”

Cave Story+ | Dragon

At initial release, physical copies of Cave Story+ for the Switch will feature several fan-pleasing collectible bonus items in the case with the Game Card, including a full-color 32-page instruction manual and a free Cave Story+ Famitracks soundtrack mini-CD. Physical copies sold at GameStop will also include a “blind-bagged” chibi keychain featuring one of three Cave Story characters, randomly inserted. The PVC keychain comes in a branded microfiber drawstring pouch that doubles as a cleaning cloth to safely remove fingerprints from your Nintendo Switch screen without scratching it. The instruction manual/CD inserts and the GameStop-exclusive keychains will only be available in strictly limited quantities based on the game’s initial production run.

Developed and published by Nicalis, Inc., Cave Story+ is now available for Nintendo Switch for the suggested retail price of $29.99 ($39.99 in Canada). The game has been rated E10+ (for Everyone 10+) by the ESRB. Nicalis previously developed and published the Switch hit The Binding of Isaac: Afterbirth+, a hugely popular Roguelike game, and has also announced plans to release several additional Switch games in 2017, including the futuristic anti-gravity racing game Redout, the sword-and-sorcery platform adventure Tiny Barbarian DX and the retro-inspired platformer 1001 Spikes.

Deemo: The Last Recital

It has been announced that Deemo: The Last Recital will finally be released in the West. The game which was originally a mobile title available on iOS and Android, was released with additional content for the Vita in 2015. The game is set for a digital release sometime this Spring. However, if you really want the game physically the version of the game released in Asia came with English subtitles. Here’s the description of the game:

“Deemo is a mystic character lives in solitude, a castle, all by itself. A little girl falls from the sky, not knowing who she is, where she comes from. To help the little girl back to her world, Deemo comes to realize a tree keeps growing tall on top of the piano whenever it plays. What would Deemo do when it gets comfortable with the companionship it never had before? What if the little girl couldn’t deal with the truth when her seemingly lost memories regained?!”

Here’s a trailer for the version released in Asia.

Deemo: The Last Recital will be released on the PlayStation Vita sometime in the Spring.

One of the very last games I played this year at PAX West was Deckbound Heroes. It was a spur of the moment decision to try it out, and I mostly did so because I have a bit of an obsession with CCGs, whether they are physical or digital. So when I saw the title Deckbound Heroes, I was instantly visualizing something akin to a Magic the Gathering style game. What I got was something totally different.

deckbound-heroes-beta-screenshot-3
This sort of interface did no favors to the game.

Now, before I get too far, it is important to note that Deckbound Heroes is just now in the open Beta. Lots of things will likely be changed, and the graphics and UI will undoubtedly be spruced up in the months to come. That said, the game as it is now is a bit rough. It’s a bit of a mixed bag honestly, since the card selection interface looks very generic and dated, while the combat itself was a bit more interesting.

deckbound-heroes-beta-screenshot-4
Cards could really benefit from some nice visuals…

Gameplay revolves around selecting a deck of cards, which translate into abilities you can cast on the field of battle. The goal, at least in my time with the game, seemed to revolve around gaining more dominance over the field of battle and using resources to defeat your opponent. There is a lot of strategy involved, as you only have so many points to use each turn. What was interesting is that the cards themselves seemed to be randomly generated, and they gain abilities as you accumulate experience.

deckbound-heroes-beta-screenshot-1

The field of battle is represented by a simple environmental layout. I did appreciate how the monsters you could summon popped up on the field of battle, but it wasn’t anything life changing. Hopefully this will be vastly improved once out of the Beta. Frankly, though I like the idea of Deckbound Heroes, I felt the card aspect wasn’t that well represented. I just wanted some nice visuals to make the various cards pop, even though I understand that might be hard to accomplish with the random card generation aspect. It felt less like a card game and more like a tactics game. I just hope that as the game continues to grow it is able to streamline the concept and make things a bit more flashy. But either way, I’m glad I got the opportunity to try something new and a bit outside my wheelhouse at PAX West.

The post REVIEW: Tadpole Treble appeared first on oprainfall.

]]>
tadpole-treble-logo Title Tadpole Treble Developer BitFinity Publisher BitFinity/Sunken Treasure Games Release Date 03/09/2016 Genre Rhythm, Indie Platform PC (via Steam), Wii U Age Rating ESRB E Official Website

Recently I’ve been digging into the rhythm game genre, and I’ve realised that I’ve developed a very Marmite relationship with the rhythm game genre, and while some are amazing (IA/VT Colorful), others are good (Guitar Hero), and others, to me, are forgettable (Persona 4 Dancing All Night). This made approaching Tadpole Treble interesting for me as it’s a budget title, and after spending some time with the game I feel that Tadpole Treble falls into the middle camp outlined. The game’s premise is quite simple – you play as a tadpole, and your mission is to get it back to its home after it accidentally gets eaten by a seagull and flown to the top of the mountain. You follow the river down where you go on your adventure. The story is told through a comic book graphical style. You follow the tadpole’s adventures and you do get a sense of attachment to it as the story goes on where the tadpole is put in various situations, which is a really nice touch when the game could have been perfectly functional without it.
Tadpole Treble | Screen 1

The gameplay itself is a rhythm game – you have to play through each song, mainly avoiding obstacles (which act as the notes, usually these are black) in order to not run out of HP. The rhythm setup is interesting – the rivers you journey down are like sheet music, with bars and notes (ie. Middle C, D) represented. You use the arrow keys to move the tadpole up and down keys, which you will need to do in order to pick up various collectables and avoid enemies. The levels start off quite easy near the beginning but get harder later on. For example, in one level you have to avoid the notes while also dodging piranhas which shoot out at you from behind after tracking your location. These higher difficulty settings will require you to manoeuvre quite rapidly through keys to avoid taking damage from the notes. You also have access to a spin attack, which you can use to hit mushrooms and bamboo poles for bonus points and more. This is actually pretty fun to play and adds some much-needed longevity for the game.

Tadpole Treble | Screen 2
The music itself has a fair amount of variety, from classical to chiptune to vocal songs too and is good quality. This is a great achievement considering that all the songs were composed by one person, it’s clear a fair amount of effort has been put into the music and I commend the developer for this. The same can also be said of the simplistic visuals appropriate for its £6.99 ($9.99 US) price tag, with the majority of the drawings only having one or two colours to add depth to the graphics. Settings of note for me include the 8-bit Chiptune Lagoon and Thunder Creek. The music and visuals are charming and help to give Tadpole Treble its unique identity when compared to other rhythm games. The main story mode in general won’t take long to complete if you’re a seasoned rhythm game player, however there are also “Challenge Flies” which you will be able to obtain if you meet a certain requirement in a particular stage. Clues to what these requirements are can be found within the “Bullfrog Grove” you unlock after clearing a certain number of stages. They aren’t always clear though, meaning that some guesswork will be required in order to obtain them.
Tadpole Treble | Screen 3
Tadpole Treble’s longevity lies in its enclosed level editor – where you can make your own simple melodies using the in-game tools. The same mechanics from the main game are present, and also some additional things, like sharp and flat notes. There are also a variety of instruments you can use from piano to guitar, as well as a number of in-game skins you can swap with as well. You can also set the tempo of the song, too. Furthermore, there is the option to load and share custom generated songs via QR codes as well as save up to 12 songs onto your save file. What is here is fairly versatile and is very easy to use and for people that wish to engage with Tadpole Treble’s world more they may be satisfied with it.

There are also leader boards for the campaign songs too, where players can post their scores for the levels online to see how they score compared to others. Furthermore, if you fancy a challenge, you can enter “Concerto” mode, which is an endurance run where you play through all the stages of the story mode in order in one run. I spent nearly five hours in total in Tadpole Treble checking out its content, and it’s clear that there as a good amount, as well as some slight reliance on replay value in order for the player to get the most out of their game. The only notable notable flaw I could find with the game aside from the Challenge Fly criteria being hard to decipher is on the last stage. This last stage is a boss level which plays slightly differently to the rest in that you have to defeat the ship’s computer by spin attacking particular things. It isn’t always obvious what you are meant to spin-attack in order to beat the boss, and I spent more time than I wanted to on that particular stage.
Tadpole Treble | Screen 4
Overall, Tadpole Treble is well-done and is appropriately priced at £6.99 and it deserves credit and success for what it manages to achieve as a budget title. These achievements are simply being a substantial rhythm game with solid gameplay and well-produced soundtrack hiding behind its deceptively simple exterior. For those wanting a budget rhythm game to play this year, Tadpole Treble is a good choice and comes recommended. For those who want more complexity or a bigger budget for their rhythm games, you may be better off looking elsewhere for their rhythm gaming fix.

FF XV Season Pass
So many dramatic stares!

Square Enix today has announced a Season Pass for Final Fantasy XV, which is slated to release on XBox One and PS4 this coming September 30th. Besides allowing players to download additional content, they are also working with those who have already preordered the game digitally, by offering a Season Pass Upgrade. For everybody else who haven’t put money down yet, there is a Digital Premium Edition with all the bells and whistles for $84.99. That might sound expensive, and it is, but the upside is that according to Hajime Tabata, there will be a lot of content. Specifically, he noted that DLC plans were pretty much set in stone, and would include more story, more costumes and even some other unspecified surprises. So if you’re a fan of Final Fantasy these days, you’ll have a lot to look forward to next month.
